To reach students, which means to motivate them to learn, a tutor needs to know each student as an individual. Ernst Tutors, in the free initial consultation, gets to know the student, his/her hopes and expectations, learning strengths and weaknesses, and learning blocks and anxieties. Our aim is to figure out how to make the subject matter more fun, interesting, relevant, and accessible to each student. Each tutor’s goal is to convey to the student that the tutor not only cares about the student’s academic success, but also the student’s happiness and positive attitude towards learning.
How does Ernst Tutors accomplish this? First, we must establish a good working alliance with each student and his/her parents. Our success comes from each student knowing that we are invested in his/her academic success, confidence in learning, and enhanced self-esteem. Our emphasis is on what happens now and in the future. We work to have students understand the material in ways suited to their learning styles. We pose specific questions which reinforce comprehension of concepts and strive to make learning meaningful and fun. We believe that self-esteem plays an important role in the learning process. Our focus on subject matter, problem-solving techniques and strategies, ability to know each and every student, and optimal engagement of the student, lead to a successful outcome.
Every tutor comes to the session ready to impart real-world applications to subject matter that may seem to the student esoteric and sometimes irrelevant. We offer real applications for students, including examples from sports, psychology, medicine, and music.
Further, Ernst Tutors provides notes to each student, either in handouts or via email, which pertain exclusively to his/her learning needs. Our goal for each student is to think about, understand, and apply the concepts we have taught. We reassure our students that expertise often does not come easily and quickly.
Ernst Tutors understands that students can be intimidated by in-class testing as well as by standardized testing. In order to help them with this, we become familiar with each student’s learning style, how to motivate him/her to learn best, and how to apply our learning techniques and strategies under all testing conditions. To this end, our access to an in-house psychological consultant gives us a distinct advantage.
